Virtual dipoles and large fluctuations in quantum gravity

چکیده
The positive energy theorem precludes the possibility of Minkowski flat space decaying by any mechanism. In certain circumstances, however, large quantum fluctuations of the gravitational field could arise—not only at the Planck scale, but also at larger scales. This is because there exists a set of localised weak field configurations which satisfy the condition ∫ dx √ gR = 0 and thus give a null contribution to the Einstein action. Such configurations can be constructed by solving Einstein field equations with unphysical dipolar sources. We discuss this mechanism and its modification in the presence of a cosmological term and/or an external field. 04.20.-q Classical general relativity. 04.60.-m Quantum gravity.

1. Color dipoles, the unintegrated gluon distribution and DIS When studying the interactions of a highly energetic (virtual) photon it is of great help to think of its hadronic vacuum fluctuations as being components of its (light– cone–) wave function [1]. Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) can then be viewed as an interaction of frozen multi–parton Fock states of the virtual photon with the targ...
متن کاملLarge “Dipolar” Vacuum Fluctuations in Quantum Gravity
We study a novel set of gravitational field configurations, called “dipolar zero modes”, which give an exactly null contribution to the Einstein action and are thus candidates to become large fluctuations in the quantized theory. They are generated by static unphysical sources satisfying (up to terms of order G) the simple condition ∫ dxT00(x) = 0. We give two explicit examples of virtual sourc...

Quantum phases and fluctuations in correlated electron systems with frustration and competing interactions are reviewed. In the localized moment case the S=1/2 J1 - J2 - model on a square lattice exhibits a rich phase diagram with magnetic as well as exotic hidden order phases due to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. Their signature in magnetocaloric quantities and the hig...
متن کاملStability of semiclassical gravity solutions with respect to quantum metric fluctuations
We discuss the stability of semiclassical gravity solutions with respect to small quantum corrections by considering the quantum fluctuations of the metric perturbations around the semiclassical solution. We call the attention to the role played by the symmetrized two-point quantum correlation function for the metric perturbations, which can be naturally decomposed into two separate contributio...
